With Talent, Comes Power

With Talent, Comes Power

Power is a concept that manipulates our minds into various thought processes. When thinking about power, we immediately jump to the conclusion of hierarchies, taking control of what we do and think. In social media, we acknowledge those with the most "likes", or "followers" as the ones whom hold power, as they have the control over what we see and think. In personal prefrenance, I believe it's time for change, "Take charge: create your own online service", (Turkle, 1995). It's time to eliminate the concept of power and to create an interactive, social networking world, where we all feel the power of connection.

For the next few weeks, I have decided to blog about the site, "DeviantArt". For me, this is a new social network that I have never heard of before. Externally, it appears to be a site based purely on art works where one shares with the DeviantArt community.

As I sign up and log in for the first time, I begin to be amazed at the extent of artistry on display of pupils talents. Which then begins my wonder of how to build your cliental of art lovers to gain power. To succeed, "Comparakeet", a well known review website, mainly for virtual worlds, states "
when you have a talent to show to the world, all that you need is a good presence". (Comparakeet, 2017). This brings me to the conclusion that with talent, comes power. The power to grow contacts, to grow fame. To be one whom is successful, is to be one whom is talented from the start. "Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self given. Be careful." (Wooden, 2017).

We live in a world where dictation is controlled. Through politics, media and much more, we are forced to follow rules and regulations, not only in law, but also in societal beliefs.
"The small-world (phenomenon) reveals an underlying dynamic of interconnectedness that expresses itself indelibly in who we are, how we think, and how we behave." (Buchanen, 2002, p.33). Buchanen expresses a point so valid to todays morals. If one were to be given a position of power, it is in their control of how they spread their actions to others. For example, politicians are given the responsibility of spreading their knowledge to better their country. Once they have been rewarded their position, their thought process immediately turns to different thinking methods on ways to change others for what they believe is for better. As daunting as this comes across, its power. They hold the permission to determine how we behave and act simply through their title in the Parliament house. How did they become who they are? Simply through their talents of leadership.

DeviantArt has grasped my attention significantly, even through simply signing on and browsing what is for offer. For the next few weeks, I will continue to browse this site to broaden my knowledge on how power impacts users, even in the slightest of ways. How would I use my current talents to gain my way up the social ladder of power? Would it be for better, or for worse?
